Should Death Penalty Be Abolished?(Final)

Death penalty has been with us for a long time. Almost all societies had death penalty in the past and the regulation still exists even nowadays. However, it’s a controversial issue that has been debated in human society. The advocates of repealing death penalty say that human beings don’t have the right to decide others’ lives. On the other hand, the opponents state that those criminals deserve to be punished. In my opinion, I disagree with the abolition of death penalty.
First of all, from a Christian’s view, the opponents argue that death penalty is absolutely wrong in modern society and they quote from the Bible, “Thou shalt not kill”, to reveal the opposition of Bible to this punishment. However, the Bible also announces that “An eye for an eye.” It means that those criminals should pay for what they take from their victims and this is also an evidence that shows the Christian’s acceptance of death penalty.
Second, death penalty is an effective way to deter crimes and punish criminals. The death penalty is useful against criminals because it can prevent people from committing crimes. Although the purpose of justice system is to reform characters of criminals, still some criminals are incorrigible. Besides, the needs for the public security outweigh the needs of the guilty. In order to fulfill people’s expectation of justice system, just like Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution states “No person shall... be deprived of life ...without due process of law…”, it points out that with due process of law, a convicted person may be executed legally.
Last, the substitute way for death penalty will increase the expense of government. Opponents to death penalty indicate that the expense of death penalty is higher than the cost of life imprisonment. However, the high cost of death penalty results from criminals’ appeals and prosecutors’ investigation. Therefore, with careful investigation we can guarantee that we can avoid the mistakes to convict innocent people.
More and more people, such as ethical reformers and ombudsman, oppose the penalty because of the human right. They insist that death penalty is immoral and brutal and those criminals have the right to stay alive even though they commit crimes. Nevertheless, just like Jeff Jacoby states “the execution of death penalty sent a powerful moral message”. When a murder is executed, it delivers a message “that the life he took was so precious, and when he commits the horrific crime, he loses his own right to remain alive.”
To sum up, I believe that death penalty is a necessary evil in our society. It assures that the murderer will not commit crime again, and it is an efficient deterrent to protect us from potential risks.

3. The needs of public security are more important than the needs of convicted criminals.
4. The advocates of death penalty state that life imprisonment will increase the expense of government.
5. Death penalty can be seen as a means of retribution.
6. As a deterrent to crimes and prevent potential dangers in society.

Con:
1. The ethical reformers argue that the death penalty is wrong from the Christian view.
2. The death penalty is the absolutely opposed to the aim of justice system which aims to reform the character of criminals.
3. The death penalty is not an effective method to deter crime and it may have the possibility to execute innocent people.
4. There is another way to punish criminals, that is, life imprisonment, an alternative way to achieve the goal of preventing crime.
5. Killing someone is always wrong, and two wrongs can’t make a right.
6. Even with a careful investigation, there are still chances to execute innocent people.

6/13 Black Friday

Just like people said, Black Friday is really a bad day. Today I have a Deutsch test, I prepare it for a long time. However, I don't know that we have another handout in the range of the test, when I know that it already the last hour before the test, but I don't have enough time to read it. Therefore, I have already know that I will get a bad grade in this test. We have a celebration of our DFLL drama this night, but I think that I have the tests to prepare, so I don't go to the celebration. But I stay in the dorm all night and doing nothing but playing and chatting. Although this is just because I can't control myself. The final exam is coming. I hope that I can get good grades this time.

PE class

This semester I choose basketball for my PE class. At the beginning, I am interested in this subject, but after the first month. I begin to cut class until yesterday I suddently think that I should stop doing this. When I attend the class, it's already the time to take the final exam. However, when I practice for the exam, I twist my ankle and I think that I can ask the teacher let me take the exam next week. However, the teacher said I have already flunked in this course because I was absent too many from this class. When I heard this, the first word in my mind is "shit", but I realize that isn't anyone's fault but my fault. I regret about what I done in this course in this semester.

5/30 the Deutsch drama

Today's Deutsch class, we have to use what we learned in this semester to perform our play. We divide into few groups. After a brief discussion, we decide to choose Cinderella. In order to bring some interesting factor into this play, I play the role of Cinderella. Before we step on the stage, we are nervous and keep memorizing our lines. Finally, it's our turn. Although the music has some problem in the beginning, but we finish the play successfully. From the beginning of learning Deutsch, it has already two years, though I didn't get a good grade on this subject, but I feel interested when I come to class. I hope that I can learn more in the last year of college. In a word, I love this class.

This is the last and the most important activity in this semester. I am one of the staffs. This time we cooperate with the other two schools, Providence University and TUNGHAI University. We prepare for this activity for a long time in order to live up to audiences' expectation and have great performance. It remains two days before the performance. Third, in order to live up to the expectation of society and fulfill the justice, executing those guilty criminals is justice for society. When someone kills people, he should pay for it with his life. This is a deep-rooted thought in human society. This is also a way for criminals to repent for what they had done..
However, the opponents of this regulation consider the death penalty is immoral and brutal in such a modern world and we don’t have the right to deprive criminals’ right of living. For their opinion, I have some questions to ask them. If it’s immoral for us to determine criminals’ life, how criminals explain their crimes. Why they can be under the protection of human right after they commit horrible crimes and try to avoid the punishment. This is ridiculous. Their human right had lost when they commit crimes. They must pay for their wrongdoings. Besides, some people say we can use life imprisonment instead of death penalty because death penalty is a brutal and ruthless way. Nevertheless, the expenses of life imprisonment is paid by citizens’ tax, this will be a burden for people.
Finally, I think the death penalty has its necessity for maintaining the order of society. No matter how cruel the death penalty is, from the viewpoint of victims and justice, the death penalty shouldn’t be abolished. They are necessary evils in this world.

Congratulation

Today is my birthday. I have three wishes. First, I hope that all my courses can pass successfully. Second, I hope that I can get rid of all my bad habits. Though I promised to quit my bad habits before but I often failed in few days. so this time I hope I can succeed. The last, I hope that all my wishes can be realized. it still has one year before I graduate, I hope I can do my best to make my spare college life more colorful.

American Gangster

My life is so boring so I have to get some entertainment by watching movies. This time I want to introduce a movie called"American Gangster ". It's really a good movie. This movie based on a true story which happened in 1970 in America. The corruption of police is serious, and the Vietnam War causes great impact on America. Under the shield from police, Mafia manipulates the drug market without fear. Frank Lucas, the main character succeed in drug market and get a higher position than Mafia, finally he was arrested by a fair police, Richie Roberts, and change his mind to help accusing bribee. Frank and Richie just like the counterpart of the other, they are critical in ethics and this makes them different from their colleague. Finally, their intertwined fate not only change their life also change the destiny of New York City.

Midterm

I have nothing to say about the midterm, it had already passed. So let's talk about other topics that have nothing do with the midterm. Recently, I watched a movie called "Maiko Haaaan!!!", it's a Japanese movie. It describes Japanese traditional culture in a humorous and exaggerated way. This movie tries to adorn the Japanese traditional culture with modernism and expresses in western musical form. The backround of this movie is in Kyoto, a city that is different with Tokyo. In the planned preservation of government, it presents a surprising and graceful eastern culture. Someone say that the rapid change of society make the culture undergo a great impact, and impact definitely create breach in the culture. This movie is the creation after culture shock. I think this movie is worthy to watch.

The Mist

Though next week is the midterm exam, but I still can't concentrate on my study. I watched a movie called "The Mist", it's adapted from Stephen King's novel. A sudden blizzard makes the town no electricity, people go to the supermarket to buy supplements, but in the supermarket, they are coverd by the mist outside, and there are something in the mist. The only way is to pull together to escape from the mist. However, when people face the death and with the spread of fear, people begin to reveal their nature. In this film, we can see that when people face the unknown things, how they deal with their fear, some people may decide to trust themselves, some may seek cooperation, but most people will seek the consolation from religion. We can also see that human is vulnerable and humanity is selfish and cruel when we face the horror and death. In the end of this movie, the car of people who escape from the supermarket short of feul, but they still in the mist, they feel despair and decide to suicide. However, they just have four bullets, so the leading man kill others include his child. He thinks it a savaltion for them, but after done this, the army shows up. The salvation for them becomes the torment for him.

Laziness

3/28 Friday, it supposed to be our training day, although I went to bed late, I stiil got up early and get to the court on time. Last month, we participated the competition for English department, we hoped that we can get a good result, but we failed. Therefore, we decided to practice more diligent in order to play better in next competition. However, this is the first training after the competition, we haved taken break for two weeks. Only four people showed up in the court, others still sleep. Finally, we practiced for an hour and dismissed. I felt angry about this, I hoped all of us can get the court on time and practice.

Spring Vacation

4/2 to 4/6, it's the only long vacation in this semester, so I reserve the train ticket early. After the spring vacation is the midterm exam, I also bring my textbook home to prepare the midterm. It rains all day in I-LAN, it makes me feel bored, the only thing I can do is stay home watch TV or play computer games. Finally, the rain stops and sun comes out, my friends and I plan to have a barbecue in my friend house, but it's canceled because only few people have time. Some of them prepare for the midterm exam or the test for graduate school and public service. I hope that they can achieve their goal, however, I also worry about my future at the same time. Last week, our department invited a graduate to introduce us International Trade Institute, I think this is good choice after I graduate, but the problem is I have to pass the exam first, according to the introduction of the graduate, the test is not easy to pass, and the yearly tuition is expensive. All I have to do is how to allpass in this semester.

After I read the article “College Lectures: Is Anybody Listening?”, I think our education system have the same problems like them. The author mentions that both of students and professors are not doing their duty well. He also indicates the lecture system is a big problem that has existed for long time and seldom to challenge. The consequence of this phenomenon makes college graduates lack both basic skills and general culture. Moreover, businesses and industries have to endure these uncreative and ineffectual graduates. Compare to the American education system, the education system in Taiwan maybe worse than their situation. First, the ability of our native language has declined year by year, second, the society and education system overemphasize the grade not the essence of education. Last, the most important are even the students don’t know what they interest in and what they want to learn.
First, although English is the most prevalent language among the world, we benefit by learning it, but we forget to cultivate our native language first. Nowadays, the slogans of kindergarten only emphasize “No Chinese” or “just English”, and parents also want their children have a good start at the beginning. This cause our next generation doesn’t realize our culture and have no ability to pass down to our descendent. What we should do is to lay the foundation of Chinese for our children and then through it to learn English.
Second, overemphasizing the grade is another problem that has existed for a long time in our society. The grade maybe a way to evaluate a student, but it’s not the only method. The pressure from school and parents make students feel anxious and depressed. What’s more, the classmates also compare to each other. That’s the reason why the percentage of students commit suicide is higher than before.
The last but not least, I consider this is the main problem in our education system. The students even don’t know what they want to learn. Their parents ask them to learn anything they think beneficial to their children. In fact, they don’t know whether their children interest in or not. The students just follow their parents’ arrangement; all we should do is to give them advices not to make decision for them.
In a word, the problems I mention above are just few problems in our education system; I also agree that smaller class is more efficient than lecture class, lecture class make us easily fall into sleep and it can’t inspire students to have interest in these courses. In my opinion, we still have space for improvement and I believe this will make our education system better.

It's a important day in the history of Taiwan's politics. The candidate of KMT and DPP has their own supporters. The tension between the two parties becomes more intense before the election. I want to go back to vote the candidate I support, but it's too far and too expensive for me to go home. Yesterday, I watched a movie"The Interpreter". The plot of this movie is about a political conspiracy and deception reveal in the United Nations, a US Secret Service agent is assigned to investigate an interprter who claims that she overhears an assassination plan. I think this is a good movie, it talk about the ethnic cleansing and wars that happen in Africa. How the power can corrupt a man after he gets the power, just like a role in the movie, Dr.Edmond Zuwanie was a advocate of democratic revolution, but when he becomes the leader of the state, he uses his authority to persecute and threat people who oppose him. In the end, his behavior is just like the predecessor who he wants to overthrow.

Trifling

This week was really a busy week for our basketball team. Each day we have a basketball game from tuesday to sunday. So far, the result of the game, we had one win and one loss. This saturday we have to go to Tainan to attend another competition. I remember that since I studied in this department, we hadn't won any game in national competition. So, this time we hope and believe we can win the game and to the next round. The first quarter of this semsester had passed, and it seems I still didn't awake from the restfulness of winter vacation.The bad habits that I mentioned before, I haven't quit yet. I still try to quit them as possible as I can.

Annoying

This is the third year of my college life. It's time to think about what shall we do after graduate from school. Some of my classmates decide to take the test of institute and others decide to get a job after graduation. However, when my classmates have made up their mind and study diligently to achieve their goals. I still have to worry about whether I can graduate successfully or not. What's more, even though I can graduate successfully from school, I even don't know what kind of job I can get. Let's put these things aside. We have a basketball competition next week, we have practiced and prepared for a long time in order to win the championship of this contest.

The Beginning

In the beginning of this semester, I reflected what I have done last year and I decided to quit my bad habits. The first is don't be absent from class, I didn't go to class very often in the last semester, this was really made me feel guilty. The second is don't sleep in the class, although I went to the class last semester, I always fell in sleep in the class. The last bad habit that I must quit is I always stay up for playing games or watching movies, it's also the reason of the bad habits given above. However, I still fail to attend the compsition class this week. I still have to try hard to fulfill my resolution.
